The World Has Need of You by Ellen Bass

…everything here seems to need us…

— Rilke

I can hardly imagine it
as I walk to the lighthouse, feeling the ancient
prayer of my arms swinging
in counterpoint to my feet.
Here I am, suspended
between the sidewalk and twilight,
the sky dimming so fast it seems alive.
What if you felt the invisible
tug between you and everything?
A boy on a bicycle rides by,
his white shirt open, flaring
behind him like wings.
It’s a hard time to be human. We know too much
and too little. Does the breeze need us?
The cliffs? The gulls?
If you’ve managed to do one good thing,
the ocean doesn’t care.
But when Newton’s apple fell toward the earth,
the earth, ever so slightly, fell
toward the apple as well.

Moa Karlberg captured these unique candid portraits of strangers by using a one-way mirror, capturing what it looks like when people look at reflections of themselves.

“There’s a huge difference between harassing a woman and trying to start a conversation. Here are some tips: talk to her, not at her. Treat her with respect: be aware of her personal space, ask her how she’s doing or what she’s reading instead of commenting on her body parts, look at her face instead of her chest. If she ignores you, drops eye contact, or walks away, back off. It wasn’t rude of you to approach her, but she’s not being rude if she doesn’t want to keep talking to you, especially if you initiated conversation while she was running an errand, waiting for the bus, or on her computer at a coffee shop.” —Catcalling Is a Problem: How to Talk to a Woman Without Being Rude, Creepy or Scary

charlyneyi:

1. Remember
2. Learn something 1 x a day
3. Play more music
4. Save the World
5. Keep feeling sorry for yourself because that’ll help (WARNING: Past-Charlyne, you were being sarcastic about that one. Do the opposite).
6. Dance more
7. Eat (food)

Deal.

“I worked with a director once who told me, ‘Stripping yourself before the world is the only way to get free.’ In offering up the vulnerable pieces of my own story, I’ve realized how similar it is to so many other people’s experiences. In recognizing myself in others, and vice versa, I’ve found healing and redemption. I always remember that when I’m afraid in front of an audience. Whatever I’m giving up in this moment, was never mine to keep. And we will all be redeemed in the giving.” —Carlos Andrés Gómez
